The Source
Curcumin is obtained by solvent extraction of turmeric i.e. the ground rhizomes of natural strains of Curcuma longa L. In order to obtain a concentrated curcumin powder, the extract is purified by crystallization . The product consists essentially of curcumins; i.e. the colouring principle ( l,7-bis(4-hydroxy-3-methoxyphenyl)hepta-l,6-dien-3,5-dione) and its two desmethoxy derivatives in varying proportions. Minor amounts of oils and resins naturally occuring in turmeric may be present. Only the following solvents may be used in the extraction: ethylacetate, acetone, carbon dioxide, dichloromethane, n-butanol, methanol , ethanol, hexane .
The appearance of curcumin is yellowish to orange red free flowing powder, has the characteristic odor-turmeric like, the active ingredient is curcumin. It cannot dissolve in water and ether, easy to dissolve in ethanol, acetic acid and propylene glycol, completely soluble in acetone. The color shade of acidic solution is pale yellowand reddish brown in alkaline condition. It has a good resistance to heat, but not to light and Fe2+. It has superior pigmentation,especially for protein.
